Behind the Designs
A Peek into the Creative Mind of the World’s Top Designers

Story by Debra Kronowitz

In an ongoing series, Design District Magazine sits down with top creative designers to get a glimpse into the creative mindset. In this issue we spoke with furniture designer Steve Reisman, co-owner of Miami-based Neoteric Home and Neoteric Contract. Neoteric Home recently earned the 2008 Best of Boutique and Design Excellence Awards and the Interior Design Best of Year Merit Award for its chic, affordable, handmade eco-friendly furniture. The company offers a broad product line of green furniture, including full sofa sets, dining sets, loungers, chaises, modular seating, tables and other attractive furniture, which is adaptable for large or small outdoor spaces.

Q: What is
the process you go through when you begin the creation of a new product?

A: I ask some major questions – what is the intention, what is the purpose, does it work best as a canopied daybed, lounger, etc.

Q: Do your ideas usually come swiftly, or do they grow slowly over time?

A: They typically evolve over time, but the concept may come swiftly. My team and I believe good design evolves over time. Simplicity is the hardest thing to achieve.

Q: What inspires/influences you to create a new collection or design a new project?

A: My work has allowed me to travel, and I have found that inspiration comes from the sights, sounds and smells of the places I’ve been. For example, we did a project in Dubai in which we were inspired by the island’s shape – it’s like a palm. We designed everything in organic forms and shapes.

Q: What are the major elements in your designs?

A: Nature, old Hollywood and the clean, defined lines of the international modernist movement.
Your company has garnered many awards for its modern design with a green edge.

Q: What’s behind the vision?

A: My business partner and I saw an untapped market in the outdoor furniture market and we believed we could create forward-thinking, out-of-the-box collections that would create conversation, captivate and be good for the environment.

Q: What do you love most about what you do?

A: Everything – the creative aspect, the designers, the architects and properties.

Q: Any new collections on the horizon? If so, can we get a sneak peek?

A: Yes, we just came out with the Lanai Day Bed, a four-poster bed, and our new Palm Day Bed, which has a Moroccan feel with its round bed foot stool. At the end of March we will premiere our St. John modular sectional sofa set.
