Roads Traveled
Passion for Travel and Love of Eclectic Wares
Unites Them
Story by Debra Kronowitz
To succeed in business it takes more than
a vision. It takes passion, drive and a sense of knowing what one is
doing. Imagine coming together with a total stranger to create a totally
unique kind of business that stems from the love of traveling. Such is
the case of Scott Parker and Bruce Platt, co-owners of Jalan Jalan.
The two were introduced by a mutual friend and their passion for travel
and eclectic accessories brought them together to pursue a dream of
traveling the world and bringing back wares for the public to enjoy. In
2002, the duo opened Jalan Jalan with the vision of creating a new view
of the world through one global vision. “We are an unusual mix,” said
Platt, “but it works.”
Coming from two different industries, Platt and Parker have created a
10,000-square-foot showroom that offers the most unique collection of
home furnishings and decorative accessories. “It is ethnic chic,” said
Parker. “We offer things you won’t find around the corner, a perfect
blend.”
Both Parker and Platt enjoy traveling the world and use their personal
travels to find Jalan Jalan’s treasures. Platt enjoys Europe while
Parker favors Asia. “The culture is fascinating,” Parker said. When not
traveling, Platt enjoys exploring closer to home. Islamarada is a
favorite jaunt. “It’s a hidden gem and a place where I can kick my feet
up and just relax,” offered Platt.
Parker enjoys golf and landscaping his one acre property. “These are
ways I can detach and drop all the stress from work,” he said. Parker is
also an avid lover of standard poodles. In fact, two of his four dogs
are champions.“I’ve always been a dog lover and when I saw the breed I
just connected,” he added. |

Committed to helping those in need,
Parker and Platt are in the development stage of planning to tie in with
Art Basel a fundraiser to benefit Miami Children’s Hospital. “We
want to bring in the Miami social scene and with everyone coming in for
Art Basel, we think it is the perfect time to raise some much
needed money. You take a look at these babies and children and you see
just how beautiful and vulnerable they are,” said Platt. “You just want
to help.”
