Osirys Mendez Goes Bold

Osirys Mendez of Mendez International is considered one of South Florida’s most prolific designers. With a client list that reads as a “who’s who” of Miami’s jet-set, Mendez prides herself on her ability to always create something new by mixing various design styles. Her signature, though, is modern in a classical sense with an emphasis on clean lines.

Mendez recently completed an installation in the spectacular Icon South Beach. The client was a young, successful single entrepreneur who wanted his SoBe condo to resemble his progressive lifestyle.

Icon South Beach was designed by renowned French designer Philippe Starck and developer Jorge Perez of The Related Group. A contemporary two-tiered residential tower, Icon rises 35 and 40 floors, respectively, and, as with many of Perez’s buildings, features an impressive collection of fine art in its common areas.

The project began with Mendez gutting out the entire space and reconfiguring room sizes and use. The only element left from the original space was the kitchen cabinets. Mendez and her team kept the space as three bedrooms, but redesigned it with a much larger master bedroom, an area for an office/convertible and a large guest room. In the kitchen new backsplashes, counters, lighting and accessories were installed.

“I spent a lot of time listening to my client – which is the most important thing a designer can do – and we provided him with exactly what he wanted,” said Mendez. “The client was accustomed to high-end brands and wanted his home to reflect an upscale, modern and contemporary look without the South Beach influence.

We went for a complete design look by using rich pieces that are strong in personality, yet durable. My client entertains a lot and has a lot, so we wanted to achieve a look and feel that appealed to that as well.”

With that goal in mind, Mendez brought in rich, dark colors and focused her furnishings from a select number of designers, including FENDI, Ligne Roset, Roche Bobois, Minotti and Artéfacto. As for budget, there was no set budget – the client purchased everything he liked. The bold designs of FENDI were used as the focal point to the home.

“FENDI was perfect for achieving that goal,” said Mendez. “The pieces chosen are appropriate for my client’s lifestyle; they are fashionable and durable in workmanship.”

Mendez intricately combined exclusive FENDI Casa pieces, products and materials to create a luxurious yet livable setting. A hand-tufted FENDI area rug in taupe and made of Indian wool and viscose was used in the living room together with FENDI cushions and accessories; the tables are the Caulfield and Cesar by Minotti. A chaise lounge bought at the Milan fair floats in a space where the client can relax and enjoy the breathtaking views that surround the unit.

“He looks as good as James Bond sitting in his Skeleton chair by de Sede behind an antique 19th century Louis XV desk. I love that look of modern furniture sprinkled with a mix of antique,” added Mendez.

In the powder bath Mendez created a custom mosaic by Bisazza made of wood, steel, mother of pearl and a tiger eye a FENDI lamb fur rug accents the chrome cone-shaped sink by Neo-Metro.
