When a Brazilian investment firm wanted to expand its offices on Brickell Key in downtown Miami, the principals chose a 4,713-square-foot L-shaped space that offered a beautiful bay view. The space was dark and furnished with old cubicles left behind from the previous tenant. The principals knew they didn’t want the typical office layout with a desk, two chairs and a file cabinet. Instead, they envisioned a more friendly work environment with a working desk, low file cabinets that fit under the desk and a comfortable armchair alongside the desk.

The space needed to provide a flexible working area for individuals, groups and meetings. In addition, the principals knew they wanted a high-end look and feel in their furnishings and chose Italian manufacturer Poltrona Frau as the main source.

When the principals met with Miami interior designer Barbara Dacquino, they asked her to create an interior space that would meld their vision with their penchant for traditional elegance and modern, upscale décor. The challenge was to create a space that was flexible and efficient, with no visible fracture between the management offices and the interactive space or employee offices.

Dacquino was determined to create an office that reflected the sensibility, workstyle and identity of her client and its clientele. She demolished the existing layout, leaving a big open space and structure. The concrete floor was cut and floor outlets for the work stations [with grommets] were installed. A new network and wiring were installed for the phone system. Recessed downlight fixtures by Lightolier are used throughout the space and include Alter louver recessed direct/indirect fluorescent lamps with micro-perforated mesh white lamp shields and a Calculite ProSpec Linear downlight.

The result is an open space divided by glass partitions with streak-stripe décor by Archiutti to create privacy. The space features eight offices – four for executives and four for mid-level managers – along with two conference rooms, lounge area, pantry, IT room, print/copy room, secretarial area, a reception area and open space for 14 workstations. The individual offices were designed around the window’s perimeter, and the L-shape space remained for the workstations and the secretarial area.

“It’s such a beautiful view that I made the window the focal point,” said Dacquino. “The key to achieve a nice atmosphere was the large, airy space overlooking the bay view, where light and transparency would be the main focus.”

Dacquino chose a color scheme of deserto, dune and avorio accented by touches of ribes and vinaccia. “I chose neutral colors to complement the green, blue and turquoise colors of the bay and the sky,” Dacquino said. “Red colors are also natural colors; the first paints ever made were from pigments which are dyes taken from rocks and earth colors,” she continued. Warm colors are also found in the brown carpet, beige limestone and white walls.

Upon Entry

Upon entering the reception area, the eye is automatically drawn to the limestone walls designed to evoke a natural landscape environment. The area is a rectangular closed space, where the natural light and view are replaced with natural stones. The walls are covered in Majorca limestone trim with different lengths and thickness, and are installed freely on the walls to create a texture to embrace those who enter and at the same time, stimulate curiosity.

There are four doors – one is faux and has been created to keep the symmetry between the other doors, while two lead to meeting rooms and the third, to the offices. The reception desk was designed to be covered by the same limestone as the walls and become part of the space. Poltrona Frau’s products furnish the space throughout. What makes this office unique is that all the furniture is leather, even the desktops of the desks and conferences tables.

The leather furniture acts as an accent in a monochromatic environment. Here, two Regina armchairs – an extremely modern design of the bergere chair – in burgundy with grey metal reclines. A comfortable Esedra Pouf upholstered in leather compliments the Regina chairs. In addition, two elegant, yet practical, Bob tables with round top and multilayer wood structure serve as side tables. The receptionist sits in a leather Brief chair.

Inside, clear glass partitions with swinging doors by
Archiutti are used for the manager offices. The workstation area within the open space was designed to stimulate human relationships.  “The principals did not want a strict division between who is behind the desk and who is in front of it,” said Dacquino. To accommodate for that request and for the work area’s flexibility, Poltrana Frau designed the desks with leather partitions to create more privacy; the desks are also able to accommodate for extra fittings and computer hardware.

The 14 workstations feature Poltrona Frau’s Artu collection for simplicity and flexible detail. Each office has the Artu Easy with leather partitions, an Onda office chair and an Artu drawer unit. In the workstations, lighting is Lightedge’s Peerless Pendant Mount Modular. On a back wall, Dacquino created an 18-foot cupboard made of aluminum to act as a file room.

For the mid-level management offices Dacquino used the Artu Scrivanie leather desktop executive desk in Bordeaux with complementary panels in beige. The Artu drawer unit and Onda office meeting chairs are also in beige. The secretarial area accommodates two and features the Artu executive desk in leather, Onda office meeting chair and the Aster X leather armchair. The Aster X is a re-interpretation of the classic director’s chair. A clear-cut linear cross-over frame forms an X, which supports the seat.

The upper management offices are furnished with Poltrona Frau’s Corinthia desk with three drawers, a Brief President chair and Aster X armchairs or the Hydra armchair. The desk is rectangular with rounded edges and reminiscent of a Corinthian capital. The Hydra chair is modular and elegant, and can be equipped with different backrests and arms.

The CEO’s office is furnished like the upper management offices with the exception of the Bob table. Off the office is a small lounge area that features Aster X armchairs, a Bob table and an H_O low round meeting table. The table features a clean, incisive design that is not ostentatious. It embraces a fusion of wood, porphyry and leather with a sense of proportion – a timeless elegance.
The other two meeting rooms feature the Corinthia oval meeting table with glass, Vittoria office chairs with tubular arms and the Cornithia short unit credenza.
The end result draws together modern and traditional elements, and fabrics with neutral colors and textures. “Poltrona Frau is the brand name that symbolizes discreet luxury and universal elegance. The company’s craftsmanship is an original encounter of traditional and modern sensibilities; the same type of balance we strive for in daily life,” said Dacquino.
