Design & Nature
Adriana Hoyos Designs the Perfect Place for the
Perfect Moment
Story by Debra Kronowitz
With its stunning beaches and luxury
resorts, Cabo San Lucas – the jewel of the Baja Peninsula – has once
again become a playground for the elite and a hot spot destination for
those wanting to get away from it all.
On El Médano Beach tourists are said to experience the most beautiful
sunsets Mexico offers. The relaxing ocean view is complemented by a stay
at the new Casa Dorada Resort & Spa, which offers luxury, comfort,
distinction and service. The resort, opened in 2008, features lavish
one- and two-bedroom suites and magnificent penthouse suites with rustic
tiled floors that harmonize with light, desert-influenced tones and
fabrics.
International designer Adriana Hoyos was hired to design the interior of
the space — from the suites and penthouses to the lobby and all common
areas. With the hotel overlooking the sparkling azure waters of San
Lucas Bay, the client wanted to create an environment that was
contemporary and comfortable for the American market. The effect is
exotic and elegant, yet a comfortable celebration of hospitality and an
organic environment, where design and nature blend in stirring fashion.
A pioneer of her unique style in interior design and her high-end
furniture collections, along with a specialty designing high-end hotels
and resorts, Hoyos is known for her use of natural materials from her
home land of Ecuador.
Hoyos used beige as the main color throughout, complementing it with
chocolate-brown and brick-red “to give the space lots of happiness and
brightness.” She brought together furniture and materials that resemble
nature – finishes that look like coffee beans, lattice-like profile
resembling chocolate bars and coconut inlay mosaics; off-white, beige
and sand-colored textiles; and discrete roof detailing. |

Hoyos’ Coco and Tagua
furniture collections were the motivation for the resort and spa.
Inspired by exotic materials and straight lines, the property’s suites
and apartments have a liberating sense of space, allowing the furniture
to stand out. The rooms are decorated with an elegant contemporary style
featuring light neutral tones and desert-influenced color accents; dark
woods give a hint of Asian style with an extraordinary warmness.
The Coco collection is inspired by the coconut fruit. South
American tradition-al craftsmanship and international influences combine
to create a collection that is both Old World and modern, or
“transitional” as Hoyos terms it.
Using coconut inlays as mosaics, the collection uses Latin American
materials, production (headquartered in Ecuador), and style, toned down
by Asian serenity. The collection’s cocktail tables and armoires are
used in the suites.
Some of the pieces were custom-made to be exclusively incorporated in
this resort. One of the most significant pieces was the Tagua
love seats in the lobby. “I grew up
surrounded by natural and exotic materials from the subtropical areas of
Columbia,” she was quoted by
www.feedfurry.com. “These experiences had a great influence in my
professional career because I felt attracted to, and identified by, the
applications of innate elements.”
Casa Dorada Resort & Spa is definitely distinct and a place to inspire,
indulge and let go.
