Behind the Designs

A Peek into the Creative Minds of Some of the World's Top Designers

Story by Debra Kronowitz

In an ongoing series,
Design District Magazine sits down with top creative designers to get a glimpse into the creative mindset. In this issue we spoke with architect-turned-designer
Giorgio Saporiti. Based in Italy, Saporiti has been a pioneer of modern design. Often referred to as a “machine of ideas,” Saporiti produces eye-catching furniture, fabric and carpets. His Il Loft brand was launched worldwide in 1993.

Explain the process you go through when you begin the creation of a new product.

My staff and I design a new model and then we produce the first prototype. After that, we design a fabric suitable for the model and then we collaborate on the color to be used and the way of placing the fabric and material.

Do your ideas usually come swiftly, or do they grow slowly over time?

My ideas usually come swiftly, especially when I am travelling.

What inspires you to create a new product or design a new project?

I can have the inspiration at any time and in any moment. When I am in the biggest cities like Milan, London, New York, Tokyo or Miami, it is easier to find the inspiration. In cities where I can feel the fashion, the air is “fresher” for the design.

It’s been said that color plays a strong role in your life. Why and how so?

Color is essential for me. Without color nothing is alive.

You have been successful in marrying your passion for color in the clean pure lines of your designs. Is this deliberate or just happens? Do you intend it for everything you design?

I have an innate passion for color. I can’t explain why, but I feel that this is just natural and a deliberate way of my working.

You’ve been quoted as saying: “Innovation and beauty will always be present in my work, now and in the future.” What elements are you considering to achieve that goal?

For me, to be innovative is to design a house for the final consumer who will be happy to live in it; that it is just what he desired. I do not like to be innovative without considering what each customer really wants to have and how they want to live.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love the creation of a new model; and when I see a completed project I am really happy.

When you were a child, were there signs that you would be involved in some type of design? From where do you draw your inspiration for new products?

I was looking at the beauty of nature, its colors, and my feeling was that this was my inspiration.

What other designers/architects/artists/artisans have inspired you?

Gio Ponti, Marco Zanuso, Frank Llyod Wright, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Oscar Neimeyer are some of the designers who inspire my work.

What would you want the readers to know about you?

All what I design and what my company produces is done to create a pleasant home to live every day with joy. I want all my customers to want to be at home because they are comfortable in it with the colors chosen for them.
