Awe
Awe, a new work
by artist Douglass Freed, is on exhibit at Etra Fine Art Gallery.
Freed’s sources are often ancient architecture, softly modulating
color tone and value to create illusions of emanating light, where
one’s eyes and spirit are invited to linger. With his intent to
create paintings imbued with meditative spiritual presence, Freed’s
paintings consist of two or more panels. One panel is landscape
imagery; the adjacent panel is often an atmospheric void where
vestiges of the recognizable landscape are found. The work is about
ambiguities of form and void, foreground and background, and surface
and deep space. Also, it is about ambiguities of associational
images and pure abstraction, referential and non-referential
structures.

Jewel Toned Intentions
Jewel Toned Intentions, a new work by
artist Steve Martin, is on exhibit at Steve Martin Studio. Martin’s
original oil and acrylic paintings represent a style known as
figurative expressionism. His expressionistic paintings of the human
form, the fundamental topic of art, are created by arbitrarily
laying down pure color in broad and vigorous brush strokes.

Melanin: Deconstructing Shades of Blackness, a solo exhibition by Asser Saint-Val. The
show presents Saint-Val’s new body of abstract figurative paintings
that explore the framing of identity through race. Saint-Val’s
intimate, surreal paintings are rich and vibrant in color, capturing
the viewer in a dreamlike way. Many will
remember Asser Saint-Val’s beautiful terra cotta figurative works
showing Haitian women in lush surroundings and
lavish style.
