Behind the Designs
A Peek into the Creative Mind of One of the World’s Top Designers

Story by Debra Kronowitz

In an ongoing series,
Design District Magazine sits down with top creative designers to get a glimpse into the creative mindset. In this issue we spoke with international furniture designer Adriana Hoyos. Born in Colombia and raised in Ecuador, Hoyos’ aesthetic is rooted in Latin American style, but redefined for an American and international market. The adaptable styles work well in a New York loft, a high-rise condo in Miami or a beachfront home in the Caribbean. Her collections flow naturally and effortlessly. Her latest collection, Caramelo, has exquisite movement and emphasizes the contrast between light and dark fine wood. An accomplished designer, Hoyos is considered a pioneer of her unique style in both interior design and the furniture collections. Most recently, she was commissioned the design concept of the Baylofts area of the Trump Ocean Club Panama

Q: When did you first become interested in design?

A: I believe that I was born with a strong inclination toward design. I have a strong passion for furniture and interior design. This I cultivate daily with my trips and continuous research.

What is
the process you go through when you begin the creation of a new product?

A:
It is a very complex process. First, and most importantly, is my natural inspiration that I reach with my trips and decisions. Second, we look for sophistication and novelties in raw materials to complement our own wood, seike, which is my favorite material. After that, together with our design and production team, we study the needs and preferences of the market and then we produce a prototype for visualization and critique. As a designer it is very important that the furniture be appealing, comfortable and practical.

Do your ideas usually come swiftly, or do they grow slowly over time?

A:
My ideas usually come two ways. There are times that I can have an unexpected idea through a dream, or moments that will give sparkles for creation, in which we start a prototype. There are also those ideas that come slowly, and take time to mature and evolve.

What inspires you to create a new product or design a new project?

A:
I travel a lot and I’m very observant. I am inspired by the textures and color pallets of different cultures. I also look at magazines from all over the world -- a lot of them I don’t even understand the text. This study is continuous and allows me to get a sense of global trends and designs.

What do you love most about what you do?

A:
Seeing my dreams become reality is very moving. And seeing my work in interior design and my passion for creating furniture and decorative pieces take shape is very encouraging. I like to meet different people from different nationalities and cultures, and through my work this is constant.

What is your favorite part of the design process?

A: I
definitely enjoy creating the most. Those are the moments that generally bring me peace and I find myself. Another favorite is when a prototype is accepted – that is worthy of a celebration.

Who inspires you?

A:
 My people, country and family.

The Caramelo line just launched this fall. What new projects are under way? When can we expect to see them?

A: Caramelo took us a lot of time and effort. As a creative designer, I have a thousand ideas going through my mind. At this moment, I’m starting a new project creating pieces with the purpose of helping those who are less fortunate. Also, we are working on our 2009-2010 collection, which will incorporate new and sophisticated finishes.
